An old sweater
Buttons
Sewing machine (with normal sewing stuff like thread, needles, scissors, etc..)
1.) take your sweater and cut off the sleeves and the bottom cuff of the sweater (is that what it is call... basically the bottom hem- I am going to call it a cuff)
3.) Cut the cuff to match the top of the sleeves, It should go all the way around the top of the unfinished edge of the sleeve.
4.) Sew the cuff to make a tube or circle.
7.) Flip your cuff up out of the sleeve. you should be seeing the WRONG side right now... that is OK!

What an ingenious idea--but I won't need any down here in SW Florida.

they look very cozy!!
Those are super cute Fawnda. I love the button, that's so much fun. Thanks for another great project! I'll be linking.
Oh my goodness! Those are so darling! I cant wait to make a pair! :)
I love the leg warmers. So cute! Thanks for the how to. I'll have to make me some.
Very clever! I need some, my feet and legs are always cold in the winter! Such a cozy craft!
LOVE the idea! I remember the movie and dang if it's not funny that leg warmers are coming back into style. I wish I could sew and my teen nieces would get these for Christmas. I'm still at a loss as to what frugal idea I can MAKE them, as I am doing homemade gifts for my entire family.
I remember that movie...it was one of my favorites. I love the chunky button. Thanks for the easy tutorial and for posting on Made it Mondays!
These are really cute!!! What a great way to reuse an old sweater!
These are adorable. That button detail really makes it!

I made some similar leg warmers out of a sweater for my daughter a couple of months ago. I ended up stealing them and wearing them myself and had to make more. Love the embellishment on yours!
Those turned out so cute!! You should totally go into foot modeling too:)
Super cute! I remember Footloose - and leg warmers from the first time they were "in".
Wow those are so fun. I think I need a pair.
I just created a pair. Great tutorial! I also shared it with my readers here: http://www.mahoganymade.com/2009/12/im-so-crafty-leg-warmers.html Thanks!
Holy wow! I'd forgotten *all* about leg-warmers since ballet in the 70's and high school in the 80's! These look great... I love the muted color and the cool button you found. Hm. Is it time for a leg-warmer revival? NOW I GOTTA CUT LOOSE!!! FOOTLOOSE! :D
Found you through a google search-- just made these for my best friend to wear inside her Hunter rain boots. It took about 20 minutes. Thanks!
I love love love these!! Now I want to go dig & find a sweater! Love the buttons you chose... I can't wait to try this!
Feel free to follow my blog, it's new, not so big, but steadily growing =)
These are so cute and leg warmers are next to impossible to find. Can't wait to make my own.
I don't have a sewing machine. Is it possible to hand sew this? I'm not brilliant at that, so any advice you have would be great. I love the design! Yours was the first one to come up in Google :)
i've had this tutorial bookmarked for quite a while and finally got around to making them and posted about them here: http://cucicucicoo.blogspot.com/2012/01/calzini-seconda-parte-socks-part-2.html
thanks so much! great idea! :) lisa
it appears I'm the only one having trouble with the sweater getting all wonky when i sew it? (like a lettuce edge) Any tips? i didn't do an extra cuff, just was trying to zig zag the edge so it didn't fray...
@jessica: i tried serging the edges to avoid fraying, but i got the lettuce edge effect, too. i just made another pair and did double straight stitching around to hopefully keep them from fraying too much. I still haven't washed either pair, but plan to by hand. http://cucicucicoo.blogspot.com/2012/02/ancora-con-gli-scaldamuscoli-and-again.html

Absolutely adorable! While I am certainly old enough to remember Footloose I have to admit my first thought was of an even older show - the utterly delightful Britcom known here as Good Neighbors (originally The Good Life) from 1975 ;-) There was an episode involving just such a project and every few years I tell myself I need to do it. Now I think I finally shall ;-)
