How I make Money Blogging... tips for you!

I have been making money off my blog for about a year and a half now. It started off slow and has grown a little each month. I am not bringing in big bucks, but I am able to bring a little cash to help out and that makes me feel good!

I am by no means an expert on how to make money off your blog.  But I am going to share a couple things work for me... maybe they will work for you too!

When I decided to take on Paid sponsors:
This is different for everyone.  But I waited until I had 1000 followers/subscribers.  I know that "followers" are different now that they are only allowed on blogger blogs.  But I wanted to wait to have a big enough audience so people feel like they are getting their money's worth.

How I started:
When I started taking ads on my sidebar, I offered a giveaway for FREE spots on my side bar for 3 months.  That way when people came to my blog they would see that I already had some ads on my side bar.  I also put buttons of affiliate programs that I am a part of.  To fill it out too.   I used Google calendar to help keep track of when ads should come down, and also tried to send out reminders to sponsors who's ad was about to expire.

I also starting offering sponsor posts and giveaways.  I got paid mostly in products to start with (and I still do sometimes!).  I priced my ad space and posts very cheap (I think I started at $5) and as my blog grew I changed the prices.  I would compare other blogs my size to see what others were charging... and I would often time go a little lower just so people would feel like they were getting a deal.

Where I make the most money:
About a year ago I signed my for an ad network called Social Spark.  They match advertisers with bloggers.  It sounded great to me because I was never very good at going out and finding new sponsors for my blog, I always just hoped they would stumbled upon it.

You blog. You Profit. Sign up for SocialSpark!

But Social Spark does just that!  They find the advertisers and send you offers.  It is your choice if you want to accept those offers or not so, you still have control over what kind of ads or articles go on your blog.

Working with Social Spark has brought in the most money for me.
Working with Social Spark has allowed me to work with big name brands like: Walgreens, Walmart, Glade, Coke and more.

Social Spark accepts all blog sizes, so you don't need a HUGE blog to be added to their network!

Here are a few things Social Spark wants, in order for you to sign up:
1. Content- they want you to have good content on your blog.  They don’t accept blogs filled with quotes or content clippings. Grammar and spelling are also important, please make sure you proofread your posts.
 2. Activity- You must be posting consistently.  If you have taken long breaks  between post you may want to get more consistent and try again in a month.  You should try to post at least once a week.
3. Aesthetics - they want your blog to look clean and be easy to find things.
4. Engagement- they like to see people commenting on your blog and see you interacting with your readers.

Tomorrow I am going to post on how to use Social Spark and how to get the most $$ out of it too!  So go ahead and sign up so, that you are ready!

Other Ad Networks:
I am also signed up on other ad networks that help bring in come cash: Clever Girls Collective and Blueprint Social.   They work similar to Social Spark.

With Clever Girl Collective, I have worked with brands like: L'Oreal Paris Make-up, Walgreens, Leapfrog, Etc.

Blueprint Social is just starting and they have some great brands to work with like Martha Stewart Crafts!

Don't just post ads!
Now that you are making money, don't forget why people come to your blog.  In my case it is for the FREE tutorials and craft ideas.  I am committed to bringing my readers my craft ideas and styles each week, with free how-to's.  Yes, there may be a paid post included in each week's line-up of posts but I still want to share my creativity with you too.  My tutorials are usually posted on Monday or Tuesdays and the ad post are usually posted on Wednesdays or Fridays.

I hope that you have found this to be helpful!  Let me know if you have any questions!

You made me feel better about waiting until I have a larger readership! :) I'm sure that wasn't your intent, but it helped confirm me turning down the sponsors who have already contacted me. Thank you! (and I'll be back to read the other posts, too. I'm sure I'll learn lots I'm so new at this!)

Thank you for this post...I am almost at my 90 day mark (50 followers), which I know is so new, but do you know anything about Social Spark accepting Weebly blogs? I would love sponsors one day so I am researching early. I will def. look into the rest you mentioned. Also...when do sponsors start to notice you? Thank you!!!

I am really interested in this. How do you deal with taxes and stuff like that?

I'll be signing up for those links you shared with us...good stuff!

I wanted to get a part time job at night but what I would be getting for all the time away from hubby and the kids is not worth it. I wonder if I can bring in a little this way.

Thanks so much for sharing this and being honest. I'm off to check out some of your links :-)

This is great info! I will bookmark this for when I'm ready to go that route. Like you, I want to wait to build up my readership. Also, I don't want to compromise my values by allowing 'less than classy' ad's on my page. I find it a big turn off when I visit a blog (mom type, crafty, cooking etc) and they have allowed dating or chat ad's to pollute their site. I'd love to make some money doing this, but not that way. Your tips are perfect, thank you for sharing!
