Zip-up T-Shirt Cardigan

I was totally inspired by Cheri at I Am Momma, Hear me Roar
 and her boy's t-shirt jacket...

I did a simpler version (no hood or extra fabric) and also girl-ed it up for my little princess....

Here is what I started with:
plain white shirt (found on clearance for $1.50!!)

Here is what you will need:
T-shirt (I got mine a size too big so there would be extra room)
Zipper (make sure that it is a "Separating Zipper")
Sewing machine (and sewing tools like scissors, thread...etc)
Optional: Extra fabric for embellishments

First I ruffled my lace.
(HERE is a great tutorial on how to ruffle)
I then sewed it to the bottom of my shirt using a zig-zag stitch... I had the ends meet in the middle of the front where the zipper is going to be placed.  (Sorry I worked too fast to take a picture of this part)

Place the zipper on your shirt...
...pin in place

Use a zipper foot and sew down each side of the zipper.  You may need to open the zipper at the end to get it to work.

Open up your zipper and cut the t-shirt open in between the zipper.
Cut off the extra fabric so that it does not get caught in the zipper.

You can add any extra embellishments to the shirt... I added a fabric flower to the pocket (because there was a little stain on it)

Now I have a nice spring cardigan for my little girl!

Hiya, I love the idea! As my Mother ages she has more and more trouble doing up buttons. It's been on my mind to look for alternatives. I've removed buttons and attached velcro, and that's worked well on one sweater. However, this zipper idea is awesome. Did you sew the zipper on TOP of the t-shirt? If so, maybe I'll try putting it in the traditional way.

What a great refashion! Love how you added the zip! I always learn something from your fabulous blog!!

I would love if you came and linked this project to my clothes upcycling page. It has a long term linky, so your project would stay there for more than just the week of a usual linky. We have over 60 projects linked up now – some fantastic ideas – and this month I’m upcycling lots of clothes and trying to feature lots of the links too!
Do come and take a look!
