How to Make a Felt Orange Wedge

Continuing in our Fruit Sorting Project, we are going to add oranges to the bananas and strawberries we already made!

Materials:
Orange felt
White Thread
Sewing machine (Optional- although it makes it MUCH easier!)
Stuffing
Pattern (I have mine below)

I made a circle shape for the wedge part of the orange and I made an oval shape that is a little bit bigger than the diameter of the circle for the outside peel. Feel free to use my pattern is for your personal and gift giving use!

1.) Cut out pattern and pin them to orange felt. I pinned mine to more than one layer of felt since I am planning on making more than one. But, for one orange wedge you only need one of each shape.

2.) Cut out the pieces of felt.

3.) On the circle sew and "X" using a zig-zag stitch.

4.) Also using a zig-zag stitch, sew around the circle about 1/4 - 1/2 and inch in... not too close to the edge because we have to sew on the top peel.

5.) Fold you circle in half and using a straight stitch sew a straight line on the fold.

Are you starting the see the orange taking shape now?!?!

6.) Pin one side of the peel (oval shape) to the circle WRONG sides together. I rarely pin when I sew because I am too lazy but I NEED to pin for this one. It will make your life SO MUCH easier if you pin! TRUST ME! It is OK if it butches a bit.

7.) Top stitch as close to the edge as you can. You can always trim off the extra if you don't get as close as you wanted.

8.) Now pin the other side of the peel.
a view from the other side...
9.) Top stitch across the other side leaving a 1 1/2 inch gap to fill with stuffing.

10.)Fill with stuffing

11.) top stitch the opening closed. It is OK if there is extra felt hanging off the end. You can trim if off, like I had to!

TA-DA! An orange wedge... make sure to trim you loose threads off!

I could only make 2 tonight since I ran out of white thread. But I am planning on making 4 total.
Next week we are going to make apple wedges! After you have done the oranges, apples will seem easy!
